Must meet ICAO biometric standards

The official requirements

Danish passport photos must meet the requirements set by the Danish Police, which follow the ICAO Doc 9303 biometric standard. The same rules apply to adults and children. Our AI checks every one of them before you pay.

Before you buy

You apply at your municipality's borgerservice. You may normally bring your own photo, but some municipalities insist on taking it there — check with yours before you buy. The same photo is valid for a Danish driving licence: the police requirement sheet covers both.

Photo size

35 × 45 mm

The photo must be 35 mm wide and 45 mm tall, with the head measuring 30–36 mm from the tip of the chin to the top of the hair.

Background

Plain, even light colour

The background must be free of any pattern and in an even, light colour — light blue or light grey, for example. White or light hair, and light headscarves, need a background that contrasts sharply with them.

Face position

Looking straight ahead

One person only, photographed straight on, showing the face and the top of the shoulders. Look at the camera with your eyes fully visible and your mouth closed. Headwear is allowed for religious reasons only, and your forehead, chin and cheekbones must stay visible.

Lighting

Even, shadow-free

Lighting must be even and must not cast shadows on your face or on the background. Glasses are allowed as long as your eyes are completely clear of the frame and the lenses carry no tint or reflections.

Photo age

Must be a good likeness

Danish rules set no maximum age for the photo — it must simply look like you and be suitable for scanning. In special cases individual requirements can be waived, decided where you apply for your passport.

Resolution & format

JPEG or PNG · 300 dpi

A good-quality photograph at very high resolution, with no holes, stamps or other damage. Colour and black-and-white photos are both accepted.

Colour

Colour or black and white

Glasses

Allowed, as long as your eyes stay fully visible: no tint, no glare, and the frame clear of your eyes.

Headwear

Religious reasons only, with forehead, chin and cheekbones visible
